Why one answer, not another list
Every category we cover already has a hundred "best of" lists, and they share one problem: they are written for an average buyer who does not exist. A gravel bike that is perfect for a 90 kg commuter on Belgian cobbles is the wrong bike for a 55 kg climber in the Alps, and no fixed ranking can be right for both at once.
So our finders do not publish a ranking. They build one, per visitor, from the answers you give — and then commit to the top of it. You end on one model you can defend, with the runners-up and the specific reason each of them fell short.
How a finder works
A short question flow
Budget, use case, and the constraints that actually rule models out. No sign-up and no email wall — you start answering immediately.
The market re-ranks live
Every answer re-scores the whole field in front of you, so you can see which constraint is doing the work — and change your mind while it is still cheap.
One model, with its reasons
The finder names a winner and shows why it beat the alternatives on the criteria you gave it. Then, and only then, it offers somewhere to buy it.
How the ranking is decided
Scores come from product attributes and your answers. Nothing else feeds them. The scoring engine has no access to which models carry a retailer link, which retailer pays more, or whether a model can be bought through us at all — that lives in a separate part of the code the ranking never reads.
No brand has ever paid to appear, to rank higher, or to have a rival removed. There are no sponsored placements and no paid inclusion. If a model wins, it won on the attributes you asked for.
How the site is funded
Once a finder has named its recommendation, it offers links to retailers that stock it. Some are affiliate links: if you buy, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That is the entire business model — no display advertising, no ad networks, and no data sold to anyone.
The links appear after the decision, never inside it, and each one is marked as sponsored in the page's own markup. A visitor who ignores them completely gets exactly the same recommendation.
Where the data comes from
Each finder carries a hand-curated database of current models for the markets it serves, compiled from manufacturer specifications and maintained per market — the range on sale in Germany is not the range on sale in India, and the finders reflect that. Nothing is scraped from other publications.
Specifications are indicative and prices move constantly, so confirm both with the retailer before you buy. Found something wrong? Tell us — corrections are the most useful mail we get.
Privacy, by construction
There are no accounts and no forms, so there is nothing to leak. Your answers stay in your browser and are never sent to us. Visits are counted with a self-hosted, cookieless analytics tool that stores nothing on your device and builds no profiles — which is why you have not been asked to dismiss a consent banner. The privacy policy has the detail.
Who runs DownTo1
DownTo1 is independent — a single operator based in Poland, not a media group, and not owned by or affiliated with any manufacturer or retailer. That is also the honest limit of the project: one pair of hands means categories arrive slowly and carefully rather than all at once. Write to info@downto1.com; the privacy policy carries the formal operator and data controller details.
